Ethics and Disability Rights
with Anita Swanson, PhD, MT-BC
Course Description:
Though music therapists often work with persons with disabilities (PWD), one may not realize the full extent of marginalization and discrimination of PWD. PWD make up 26% of the US population, and yet are frequently discriminated against in all facets of life.
What can we do to help our clients beyond the therapy room? How can we change our daily habits and language to be more inclusive and respectful? Are we causing harm in the way we conduct business? These questions and more will be examined alongside disability rights history and its current state. For disability rights is a civil rights issue, and we must take action to help our clients and ourselves.
To start the journey, participants will engage in a Perspective Analysis exercise to help examine potential unconscious biases regarding disability rights. Through sharing of information and discussion, we will examine disability rights concerns and possible ethical situations. Finally, we ignite a call to get plugged into your local community. You’ll have access to a comprehensive resource list of current reading material and organizations to help broaden your perspective and get involved in your community’s efforts.

Kind Words About Our Instructors 💖
I can’t even describe how rewarding of an experience leading this [songwriting experience taught by Tracy] was for me. The participants used such unique and specific description words, which… made it all the more deep and meaningful for them to listen to. Thank you Dr. Richardson for sharing this wonderful [session idea]!
“Stephanie has a unique combination of in-depth formal education, her oodles of natural talent, AND her hands-on experience as a mother as well as her years as a highly successful Music Therapist…she condenses all that knowledge down into ideas that are fun, simple to understand, and easy to implement.”
Christine is dynamic, inspirational, encouraging, and compassionate; all brilliantly expressed in the art of drumming. Christine’s method of communicating is concise, practical and accessible for any level. Her books are required materials for my college students.
