Many of our youth are struggling with trauma, addiction, mental health challenges, racism, poverty, and violence, oftentimes in the shadows. Adolescents use music as a means of coping to explore their identity, express intense emotions and foster a sense of belonging. Music therapists are uniquely qualified to build trust and rapport through the use of popular music. After my 3-year pilot study on best practices for the use of music to build empathy and resilience in adjudicated youth, I explored the efficacy of therapeutic beat-making & recording, live percussion circles using culturally appropriate rhythms, analyzing & writing rap lyrics, and meditation, mindfulness & biofeedback. This course will teach 4 powerful tools for building empathy and resilience in at-risk youth.
This course is approved by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) for 3 CMTEs.

Very very helpful! This population is overlooked and I now feel I have some foundational skills
to start diving into some sessions. Thank you for demonstrating cultural humility as well.
This was a great training! I think the rhythms were authentic to hip hop culture and I appreciate
PLEASE don’t ever stop teaching this. The world needs this. Thank you! Super interested in
your course for my inpatient mental health patients.
