Engage and validate your clients through songwriting about the city or town they live in. Using a simple familiar song, create a celebration of what they love best about where they are!
Instructions
- Assess your clients. Would they respond well and transition to NEW lyrics with the song Deep In The Heart of Texas?
- Decide whether to sing the original song, to prime and prepare your clients with clapping, or whether to go straight into songwriting.
- Sing a verse or two of the song “Deep in the Heart of Texas.” For added engagement, encourage the group to clap or play instruments on the rhythm just before “Deep in the heart of Texas.”
- Transition by observing that Texas sounds like a beautiful place, but our city is pretty great too! Validate the current town or state of the group by prompting them to fill in the blank, “We are in the great city/state of…”
- Ask individuals to tell the group something they like about their city. Example: Rochester, NY holds a popular Lilac festival each May, and clients often choose this. You can ask if they have a special memory about their choice.
- Create a verse about that feature. (It’s easiest to have verses ready to use for the most common answers. It doesn’t have to rhyme!)
- Remind them to keep using their shakers and to sing with you, “Deep in the heart of (city/town)!”
