Boomwhackers are a fun and engaging way to reinforce musical elements such as rhythm, steady beat, melody, harmony, sequencing, listening skills, and group participation. Kat has created an arrangement of “Firework” by Katy Perry to bring the fun!
Instructions:
- Boomwhackers are such a fun and engaging way to reinforce a variety of musical elements such as rhythm, steady beat, playing melodies and introducing harmonies.
- Boomwhackers required for this song
- Red (C), Orange (D), Yellow (E), Green (F), Teal (G), Purple (A), Pink (B) out of a standard diatonic set.
- Introduce the boomwhackers by reviewing the colors and note names with client(s). Allow them time to explore the sound and practice playing.
- There are multiple parts to play
- Decide how to assign parts: assign parts yourself or let the clients choose their colors
- There are three main sections: Verse, Chorus and Bridge. They are ostinatos, so keep repeating them for your desired length.
- Feel free to mix and match the different parts, or make up your own to add on!
- Teach one part of the song at a time!
- Demonstrate each pattern clearly. Practice slowly, using support or modeling as needed.
- Once clients have a feel for their individual part, begin adding in multiple parts at the same time at a rate that the group can follow along with based on their specific needs.
- Layer the parts together.
- Take as many sessions of practicing parts as your clients need before attempting the song all together.
- Reinforce a steady beat, clear entrances for parts and group awareness.
- When you feel your clients are ready, play all together, everyone with their designated part.
- Reflect and Celebrate
- Record the final performance so client(s) can listen back to their work.
- Use the recording to encourage reflection, celebrate progress and highlight teamwork as appropriate
- Optional:
- Provide each client with a copy of the recording or a printed visual of their part to remember the experience
