🍬 Halloween Manners: Re-purpose a classic song for communication goals

A Monster Mash rewrite to help kids learn how to say “trick or treat” and “thank you” while trick or treating. This song provides a fun way for children to practice this skill in the Music Therapy setting before going out on Halloween!

Instructions:

  1. Learn the song
    • Print the lead sheet to take with you if necessary.
      • Example video can be found below
  2. Explain the experience
  3. Sing the song with your group
    • You can teach your client(s) the song one verse at a time or teach them the chorus so they can sing along during specific parts of the song.
  4. Adaptations
    • Pass out instruments for client(s) to play while you sing.
    • Have an actual bucket of candy if appropriate for your group and allow space in between verses to give each client the opportunity to say “trick or treat” and get a piece of candy.
      • Printouts of candy are also available in the resources below to use.
    • Allow clients to make up their own verses if they would like to.
  5. Discussion
    • What kind of candy is your favorite?
    • What are you going to dress up as for Halloween?
    • Do you like to trick-or-treat or pass out candy to other trick-or-treaters?
    • What are the Halloween traditions in your family?
