This Week’s Shout-Out: Suzanne Oliver, MT-BC
I spent a large portion of my day yesterday chewing the fat with Suzanne Oliver, MT-BC, in Phoenix, AZ at an enormous music therapy clinic called NMT Services of Arizona.
Video camera in hand, I walked through a couple dozen clinic and office rooms, met a good handful of music therapists, thumbed through the extensive community library in the waiting area, and had the absolute honor of interviewing the master mind behind NMT Services of Arizona.
I was blown away by Suzanne’s knowledge, background, and expertise. She was one of the first (if not THE first) business owners in Arizona, starting in 1982. She started out as a sole proprietorship, grew to manage 21 therapists in the Phoenix metro-area, and eventually went non-profit in about 2006.
Her first clinic space opened in 2001. She told me that in order to make a smooth transition, she and her team scheduled four community forums in various areas of Phoenix. In these forums, they described all the benefits of moving to a space.
In a very short span of time, she moved her giant practice from 100% out in-the-field to 99% in-the-clinic. I thought that was fascinating, seeing as how so many music therapy business owners are concerned about client retention during a move.
