Reimbursement & Funding for Music Therapy Services: Private Insurance
with Jamie George, MM, MT-BC
Number of CMTEs: 3
Length of Access: 2 months
The purpose of this CMTE workshop is to provide helpful information about the primary sources of healthcare reimbursement and about how these sources might be used to pay for music therapy, as well as a step-by-step guide to obtaining reimbursement.
“Prior to taking the course, I knew NOTHING about dealing with insurance companies, so I am so grateful that Ms. George has tackled teaching this course! I am aware of nowhere else where one can learn so much information regarding reimbursement for music therapy services, so this course is definitely a useful tool in education. I am also excited to learn of the many resources mentioned during the course where I can obtain additional information regarding insurance billing/reimbursement and to know that there are music therapists out there actively billing successfully! This course has definitely helped me begin to understand how to start, the questions to ask and what to do regarding reimbursement. I think I may listen to the entire course again however as there is so much new information contained that I’m sure I missed useful information!”
–Dayna Koehn, MT-BC | Elk River, MN
“Would I recommend this course to others? ABSOLUTELY!!! I already have! I recommended to my friends who own Music Therapy Enrichment Center in Cleveland Ohio. They have just started the course and have now applied for their company NPI as of today! This course has provided me with the information I needed to move forward in the next chapter of my company. I do believe I will be taken more seriously by other professions if I can successfully be reimbursed through insurance companies. I really liked doing the online course! I also like that I have 2 months to truly learn the information and have access to the instructor if I have questions. Thank you!”
–Kenna Hudgins, MM, MT-BC | Lancaster, OH
“I would absolutely recommend this course to others. Though the information was clear, detailed, and thorough, unique questions were welcomed and responses were swift. Jamie is professional, tactful, and helpful – sometimes despite hearing the same questions over and over. She conveys a positive energy and attitude that is very encouraging. After taking the course, I feel so much more confident in negotiating with my new job site’s ownership and board. I’ve gained an advantage that will allow me to more intelligently discuss reimbursement issues, Music Therapy applications, and other related professional concerns. I now foresee myself seeking needed resources more readily and easily.”
–Rosalind Cravens, MT-BC | Oklahoma City, OK
I really enjoy the freedom of an on-line course, and it allows me to follow the material at my own pace. The way Jamie presented the course was wonderful; She made the information easier for me to understand. I would recommend this course to others, because I think it’s important for service members to start challenging themselves into providing care and learn how to receive reimbursement. I think some people are scared of the words ‘reimbursement’ and ‘insurance’. But we should never stop because of our fears.
–Jillian Tolman, MT-BC | Petersburg, VA
I would absolutely recommend this course to others! While I am still in the process of making it all happen, I feel so much more knowledgeable about the entire process. After taking this course, I plan to hopefully receive reimbursement from insurance successfully and therefore serve more clients!
–Darcy Lipscomb, MT-BC | Thurmont, MD
This course has great information. I regularly bill the state, so much of this was reinforcement that the learning curve there can translate to insurance.
–Becky Wellman, PhD MT-BC, DT | Illinois
This course was great! Attention was given to all concerns to create a wonderful learning experience. This information is so important for music therapists. After taking the course, I plan to create more access to music therapy services through acceptance of insurance. Thanks for providing this service!
–Joseph Piccinnini, MA, LCAT, CMT | Richmond, VA
I loved being able to take this course at home, and I already have recommended it. Finding all the funding sources is so useful for increasing access to music therapy services.
–Virginia Macdonald, MA, MT-BC | Portsmouth, NH
This course made me understand more about the reimbursement process and I’m grateful that I have a little more confidence to try it out. I appreciate Jamie putting this course together. It consists of a lot of valuable information and I’m glad I bought the course. I would definitely recommend it to colleagues who work with people who have other diagnoses than Autism or DD such as the ones who work in a medical or behavioral health setting.
–Christine Ockenfels, MT-BC | Phoenix, AZ
THANKS for all of the hard work that went into this course! I really enjoyed working at my own pace. I’m hoping that by using this information, music therapy services will be made wider population accessible to clients, and awareness will continue to grow. It’s also just a great topic to be more familiar with, in general. As healthcare is changing, this topic is very important to our profession.
–Kate Legge, MT-BC, NMT | Northern Kentucky
My one hesitation was whether online learning would be optimal for me, but it worked out! It was nice to be able to pause the lecture, think about what was said, and as a result, really learn the material. After taking this course, I foresee having more firepower to advocate for our clients! Also I see myself more oriented to the reimbursement world, and being less afraid of starting the process. I would recommend this course, because every therapist needs to know about reimbursement, even if they don’t pursue it themselves. This way, if someone asks any of us about reimbursement, we’ll have an actual answer instead of giving powerless answers that we don’t know the process, or have not heard of the process.
–Derlin Hsu, MM, MT-BC, NMT | San Diego, CA
Would I recommend this course to others? Absolutely! This is a topic we all need to be familiar with and trying. I see a lot of nervousness about attempting to bill insurance, but a lot of tries. Currently, there are no music therapists in CT billing insurance. This could be groundbreaking. Thank you for providing an AFFORDABLE way to do CMTEs that works with my schedule.
–Jona Jeffcoat, MT-BC | Meriden, CT
Would I recommend this course to others? Yes, and I already have. I believe that the more music therapists who have this knowledge and ability, the more credible our profession will become. I am already experiencing positive changes, in that I will soon be able to provide music therapy services alongside speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists who strongly encouraged me to obtain the ability to bill insurance.
–Erin Lunde, MT-BC | Minneapolis, MN
Jamie talks to us in a down-to-earth way that makes the insurance billing process seem a lot less daunting. I also really appreciated ability to access materials and complete the course at my own pace and at any time throughout the 2-month period.
–Jennifer Gossett, MT-BC | North Charleston, SC
Would I recommend this course to others? Absolutely! EVERY music therapist should take this course. Potential participants will not only reap the financial benefits, but this will continue to MOVE our profession forward making it relevant, valid, viable, affordable, visible and accessible to those that need it the most! The content was so informative, and this will REVOLUTIONIZE the way that I provide services to my clients that pay out-of-pocket for services. I can’t WAIT to be billing for services!
–Bonnie Hayhurst, MT-BC | Cleveland, OH
This is a wonderful course! It had great handouts, links everywhere, and was very detailed. This course is extremely valuable, and I am looking forward to expanding coverage for potential clients.
–Sara Dudik, MT-BC, NMT | Hermosa Beach, CA
Would I recommend this course to others? YES! Jamie knows her stuff and is so passionate about helping others receive reimbursement. Her ten steps for obtaining reimbursement created a clear action plan. After taking the course, I want to start reimbursement for services. I do not know anyone in Michigan who is currently receiving insurance reimbursement for music therapy and this course has given me the motivation to get the ball started!
–Kellee Coviak Hansen, MT-BC | Lansing, MI
This course has a ton of useful information! The content of the course and knowledge of Jamie is excellent. I now have knowledge of reimbursement and plan to give it a try. Thank you for offering this course!
–Shelley Tsao, MT-BC | Oakland, CA
This course helps to get the ball rolling. I agree with Jamie that the more folks that come across the desk/phone about MT the better. I plan to implement with some clients—particularly TBI and returning Vets. I will be able to go into agencies that simply pay for MT out of their budgets and now may secure additional services for clients served in agency via insurance.
–Celeste Keith, MT-BC | Sacramento, CA
After taking this course, I am more likely to attempt to receive reimbursement. This could open up new doors and opportunities in my small town, where not many people are financially able to pay for music therapy services out of pocket. I appreciated the honesty about how difficult and time consuming, but ultimately possible, the process is. I also valued to handouts and detailed descriptions of filling out forms. I would recommend this course to others, because it provides enough knowledge to feel comfortable beginning the reimbursement process, without taking too long or going into so much detail that it is overwhelming. Jamie also provides several handouts and resources for finding more information as the need arises.
–Patty Baker, MT-BC | Lebanon, OR
For me, reimbursement is scary! However, it is good to have the information for future reference if needed. I would recommend this course to others, because there is a wealth of information that could be used for individual enhancement, as well as enhancement of the field of music therapy.
–Cynthia D. Long, MT-BC, NMT | Reading, PA
Insurance reimbursement is possibly the most lucrative resource for the future of music therapy. We need to be on this now so that music therapy services are covered more readily with the insurance reforms. After taking this course, I plan to get more organized as a business and with my paperwork. I also want to widen my horizons as to the clients I treat—to have more than enough work for myself, my partner and other MT’s. I am excited for the POSSIBILITIES!
–Debi Kret, MM, MT-BC | Phoenix, AZ
Before enrolling in the course, I was sure I wouldn’t “get it.” It just seemed so daunting. After taking the course, I feel better about the whole process now, and though it is huge, especially for the first time out, I feel like it’s doable. The handouts were great! It was so nice to have hard copies for future references. I also appreciated all the online resources for more help. I would recommend this course to others, because the more visible music therapy becomes in the medical/insurance industries, the more acceptance we will receive. Any and all validation of what we do clinically can only help us in our efforts to become more widely accepted and utilized.
–Marybeth Brand, MT-BC | Hopkinsville, KY
I would definitely recommend this course to others who deal with reimbursement. This information, process, and all the work that goes into making reimbursement successful helps music therapy become a recognized therapy. I enjoyed the examples in the course—it made the information easier to understand. The walk through of how to fill out a claim was very helpful. After taking the course, I now have a better understanding of insurance billing, reimbursement, and policies. I will talk to my school to offer reimbursement for music therapy services. I feel more comfortable and knowledgeable of understanding reimbursement.
–Hilary Yip, MT-BC, NMT | Houston, TX
Prior to taking the course, I was lost with reimbursement. Now, I feel less overwhelmed with the terminology. I would recommend this course to assist others in learning and not fearing the steps to reimbursement.
–Paula Heidman Best, MT-BC| Lakeside, CA
I honestly feel so much more knowledgeable about how to implement reimbursement into my practice. I also feel like I can talk more confidently to current and potential clients about reimbursement. I feel more confident in attempting reimbursement with my clients as well! I liked how Jamie broke down what is needed for reimbursement into steps. I would absolutely recommend this course to others! The more times music therapists are able to be reimbursed for services, the more aware insurance companies and the general public are about the benefits of music therapy.
–Mahleah Lavin, MT-BC | Wichita, KS
This course was very helpful as a beginning to seek reimbursement through insurance. I really enjoyed the handouts and the clear organization of the presentation. After taking the course, I am hoping to file insurance for a client in the near future.
–Carrie Friddell, MT-BC| Nashville, TN
This course is very empowering and encouraging. It was well paced, detailed, and to the point. I found I also like taking the course online so questions from the audience doesn’t distract from the course material presentation. After taking the course, I plan to put all the necessary documentation together in preparation for clients asking about insurance coverage.
–Mimi Sinclair, MM, MT-BC | Cincinnati, OH
I was very excited to hear that music therapists are finding success in receiving reimbursement through private insurance. I now know that I can in fact find a way to bill private insurance. In the case I receive a referral for a client who does not have the Medicaid Waiver, I now feel confident in “tackling” their private insurance for reimbursement. I would recommend this course to others, because it is not only very informative but I think it is important for more music therapists to start billing private insurance so that we can increase the awareness of the effectiveness of our profession.
–Andrea Szabo, MT-BC | Cedar Lake, IN
This course is clearly laid out and easy to follow. I loved how thoroughly Jamie walked us through the billing process. I am going to be meeting with my first (potential) private pay client! I look forward to feeling out the process of billing insurance and taking the plunge into the private practice world.
–Stacey Castor, MT-BC | Salem, OR
Currently I am not able to bill private insurance, as I live in Russia, but this information will be very relevant when i return to North America and set up my private practice again. I loved being able to follow the audio along side the written transcript. It helped internalize the information better. This is a lot of information that required a lot of work to gather and put together for our benefit!
–Marshawn Merkley, MT-BC | Russia
Prior to taking this course, my hesitation was that reimbursement is so overwhelming that it is impossible. I now know it is possible to receive reimbursement and recognition in our profession! I loved Jamie’s enthusiasm and learning that it is possible! I also enjoyed the excellent resources and handouts.
–Cynthia Shawcroft, MT-BC | Medford, OR
This course is full of information. I enjoyed the relaxed feel, and felt as if Jamie was speaking to me 1:1. I also liked the forum and the recorded phone conversation, so that I also felt like I was part of an actual class. Besides being beneficial to my career, I found this information beneficial in my encounters with my personal insurance company.
–Elyse Kochmanski, MT-BC | Buffalo, NY
Would I recommend this course to others? Yes, definitely! It has inspired more confidence in me as an advocate and with the idea of opening a private practice. Reimbursement concerns involve every business and it is generally one of the first questions asked to any professional (how are your services paid for?). It is important for every professional to be completely knowledgeable in this realm so that we can demonstrate a profession that cares for the interests of our consumers. After taking this course, I now feel comfortable approaching this topic in the future to better assist future clients and to continue to be an advocate for music therapy. Jamie George was awesome and I really enjoyed this online course. Kat is a wonderful curator and did a great job stepping in when necessary!! Providing these classes has been a lifesaver for me. I will definitely be signing up for another class at some point in the future. THANK YOU!!
–Christina Strasburg, MT-BC | Arlington, VA

–Dina Budke, MT-BC | Beloit, KS
“I have been wanting to dive into the reimbursement scene for a while but was nervous about the amount of time and information I would need for success. This course gives a really nice breakdown on how to see reimbursement for your clients. MT’s should be looking into reimbursement to advocate for our clients and for ourselves. I believe that this is a key step to success and for our profession to move forward. I love how all of the information is listed in one place. Jamie did a great job – a lot of times I had a question and she answered it before I made it to the forum! I love this site and what is being created. I love seeing MT’s from all over collaborate and work together to create something great. This is also an excellent advocacy tool and eventually could be used for other professionals to receive credits. Keep up the good work! It’s neat seeing how many courses are being added.”
–Karen Joly Collins, MT-BC | Pelham, AL

–Alane Krumbine, MT-BC | Westlake, OH
“Traversing the world of reimbursement can seem so daunting! This course brings together a lot of information and success stories to make this means of funding music therapy services a possibility. The ability to work on it over a period of time makes it very convenient and even lets one watch/listen more than once as needed, this is a very good thing! I REALLY appreciate the many forms that have been provided and how clearly Jamie has gone over so many details, often more than once! The four bonus phone calls have been helpful to listen to. It’s also very encouraging to read about others who have had successes with reimbursement on the forums and to see the support that is given when people have questions.”
–Susan Phillips, MT-BC | San Antonio, TX

“I thought the material would be dry and hard to digest however it was quite the opposite! I felt so much more enlightened and inspired to bill for insurance as I now feel I can finally begin to grasp how reimbursement works! As I just started a private practice, I hope to bill for services through insurance companies and now feel prepared to embark on the journey of reimbursement! I would love for all my music therapy colleagues to take part in this opportunity as I feel that many music therapists do not understand how reimbursement functions and are therefore fearful of billing insurance companies! I feel that with this education and information, other music therapists may feel more confident in billing insurance for their practices. Thank you so much for providing an opportunity to learn about reimbursement in such detail!”

It makes you feel like billing and receiving reimbursement is actually possible! Prior to taking the course, I thought it may be a little boring:) Insurance information usually is! But, it was surprisingly not. There was a lot of information and very easy to understand most of it. After taking the course, I definitely feel more confident to start billing insurance companies for private sessions.”
–Melissa Dierenfeldt, MT-BC | Wentzville, MO
“I thought billing insurance would be really complicated. (And it is, kind of ;)), but I enjoyed seeing the success that Jamie George has achieved in billing insurance companies. It’s possible! I’m already in the process of trying to get reimbursement for the first time! I believe this course is very important. Successfully billing insurance allows greater access to MT services and gives major credibility to our profession! Jamie made a complicated process very doable.”
–Emily Starn, MT-BC | Sacramento, CA
“I wasn’t very comfortable with insurance reimbursement and didn’t want to open up that can of worms, but reimbursement through insurance companies will make a difference with future clients who don’t have the extra funds to afford music therapy services. George was so thorough in every aspect, and answered many of my questions regarding reimbursement in the course. She was constantly showing ways to advocate for the music therapy profession, which I found to be inspiring and helpful. If you want to be considered an allied professional, take this course – it teaches you how to act like one.”
–Chelsi Jones, MT-BC | Logan, UT
“I’m not sure how this course could be better than it is! Jamie is very thorough, helpful and exuberant about seeking reimbursement from private insurance. Every music therapist should be at least trying to bill private insurances. I especially liked that she included concise examples of her experiences and how she dealt with those situations, including exact language that she uses with insurance companies.”
–Kristin Kummel, MT-BC | Columbus, OH
